About the Company: Education Through Music is a non-profit organization that partners with New York City Public Schools to place music teachers and programs back into schools curricula. We are unique from other arts nonprofits in that we provide a bridge for teachers who are not certified to teach in public schools, build their program, and eventually be hired by a public school for the DOE. ETM has great reach in that we serve all five boroughs, we have partnerships with 50 public schools and provide music education to over 18,000 children. Music is a part of a well rounded education; it is essential for students' social and emotional well being and a critical tool for establishing equity and success. We are looking for teachers who are passionate about music and making a difference in their communities. Responsibilities: Leading and teaching a class assigned by the Music Teacher-MentorAssist with school-wide concerts (Winter or Spring) in which all students perform two pieces of music, respectively. This includes leading rehearsal for and conducting one song. Other tasks include assisting with all logistics sound, lighting, staging, etc.Assist with managing student behavior to maintain an optimal learning environment that is orderly, productive, free of unnecessary distractions, respectful and safeAssist with recording student progress toward learning goals based on the ETM benchmarks. This includes the use of formal rubrics customized to measure comprehension/learning for various specific lesson plans provided by the music teacherAssist the music teacher with the creation of the classrooms visually engaging bulletin board and maintain keeping the music classroom print-rich, visually engaging, neat, organized and welcomingProvide support and reinforce the classroom procedures and routines by which students know exactly what is expected of them and how they may interact with others to participate successfully that have been provided by the music teacher. This includes the consistent use of seating charts, posters and rules and consequences. Participate in ETM music teacher professional development training sessions and proactively pursue professional development by utilizing and applying ETM content, concepts, and resourcesCommit to growing as a music teacher in order to be culturally responsive to our students and communitiesTimely, responsive, and constructive communication in person and through phone/email with ETM and school staffCreate and maintain a portfolio that includes a weekly observation journal and unit plan If supporting Ensembles: Assist Mentor Teacher to keep accurate records and maintenance of materials and instrument inventory, lead pullout lessons and ensemble rehearsalsBasic Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in a Music/Arts or Related Field 1 year of teaching experience or student teaching experienceAbility to model quality singing in front of childrenSound musical knowledgeKnowledge of musical pedagogy practicesAdvanced musical notation and theory literacyPreferred Qualifications: Masters in Music Education or Related Field2 years teaching groups of children in a classroom settingAdvanced vocal or instrumental performance capabilities, particularly guitar, piano, or voiceConducting experience Hour Requirements:Candidates must work a minimum of 10 hours and up to a maximum of 13 hours a week for approximately 12-14 weeksInterns will not receive pay for days not worked during school holidaysScheduling must remain consistent for the entire semester, with at least 2.5 hours minimum at the school on each visitCandidates must be able to work within the schools music schedule
