Evidence Technician

Job Summary/Qualifications: The City of Caldwell has openings for full-time Evidence Technicians with the Caldwell Police Department. This position performs tasks related to the support of law enforcement activities and assists with crime scene processing and service of search warrants, performs other tasks assigned. Subject to shift work and call out. The principal function of an employee in this class is the processing, preservation and return and/or destruction of evidence collected by the Caldwell Police Department. This also applies to found property turned over to the Caldwell Police Department for safekeeping. On occasion the functions of this position will also include collection of evidentiary materials at crime scenes. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Services Supervisor. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class entails strict adherence to established rules and procedures. This class has limited discretion with potential for high liability, as they are responsible for maintaining strict chain-of-custody as set forth by the courts of the State of Idaho and the United States. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment and in the community. This is a full-time civilian position. WHAT YOU WILL DO:Perform evidence control and maintenance, including receiving and logging in evidence and property ordering supplies for evidence storage and processing securing evidence in specific storage rooms and maintaining accurate records for all evidence activitiesPerform a variety of report-taking duties, including releasing weapons to owners after running a criminal history check Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions, reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and retain current on principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas Operates ILETS Computer terminal (i.e. QNP for return of firearms) Processes digital media and photographsMaintains petty cashParticipates in evidence collection at crime scenes when requested, including mailing or transporting evidence to the crime lab or forensic laboratories, transporting certain evidence that can be destroyed to destruction locations and handling hazardous evidenceAssist with special projectsTestifies in court as requiredKnowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:Knowledge of the principles, policies, and practices related to the collection, handling, maintenance, storage and disposal of law enforcement evidence; Good knowledge of community resources and appropriate referrals for the general public; Good knowledge of the Idaho Criminal Code and related City ordinance Good knowledge of standard law enforcement terminologyGood knowledge if restrictions and laws pertaining to release of handguns, shotguns, and riflesAbility to operate a radioAbility to work on several different assignments at once Education, qualifications and training: Graduation from High School or possession of a GED andSome related office experience, preferably within law enforcement agency; orAny equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work. What shifts do Evidence Technicians work?Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with a day off during the week. Generally, Evidence Technicians do not get Overtime.
